Shanice Facebook Slander Incident (Summer 2014)

The Shanice Facebook Slander Incident occurred on a Saturday evening in summer 2014 after Devon Morgan ended his relationship with Shanice and provided the West Baltimore Recreation Center with a written account of the neglect and aftermath he had witnessed around her assault of Marcus “MJ” Henderson Jr. Shanice recast the assault as an attempt to wake a sleeping child and portrayed Devon’s report as a personal betrayal.

The Facebook Post

Shanice wrote:

can’t believe i wasted 3 months on someone who’d throw me under the bus over NOTHING. all i did was wake up a kid who was sleeping on the job and suddenly i’m the villain? devon’s such a fake. acts all nice and quiet but he’s really just a snake. watch out for him girls he’ll turn on you the second it’s convenient.

The post received 128 likes and 64 comments. It omitted the grabbing and shaking that left finger-mark bruises on MJ, the photographs of those bruises, and the disability slur Shanice had used in her breakup messages to Devon.

Comments and Public Response

Several commenters accepted Shanice’s account and attacked Devon’s personality, class background, and motives:

  • Brittany M.: “omg i always knew something was off about him”
  • Jason T.: “facts. dude’s always been weird. too quiet”
  • Megan K.: “he probably just wanted to look good in front of that new girl kelsey”
  • Chris R.: “rich kids from roland park think they’re better than everyone. this tracks”
  • Aliyah J.: “shanice you deserve so much better babe. he’s trash”

When Marcus L. asked what had happened, Shanice replied that Devon had lied to Ms. Patricia and gotten her suspended because of Kelsey. Destiny P. challenged Shanice’s account by recalling that Shanice had recently called Devon too passive. Brittany then accused Destiny of defending him, and Destiny stopped responding.

Harassing Messages

Devon discovered the post while recovering in his bedroom in Roland Park. Unknown numbers began sending him hostile messages:

  • “saw shanice’s post. that’s messed up what you did to her. you should be ashamed.”
  • “roland park kids really think they can treat people any way they want huh”
  • “fake ass snake”

He blocked each number and turned off his phone.

Private Support

Keisha texted Devon after seeing the post and offered to correct the story publicly. Devon declined because the commenters had already decided what they believed.

Keisha sent screenshots to Kelsey, who had only recently moved from Boston and did not yet have Shanice or most of the local commenters on Facebook. Kelsey and Keisha compared the post with what they had witnessed at the recreation center. Kelsey then wrote to Devon:

hey. keisha showed me shanice’s post. that’s fucked up and i’m sorry you’re dealing with it. for what it’s worth - i was there. i saw what happened. and you did the right thing. don’t let her rewrite the story.

She followed with, “see you monday. and seriously get some rest this weekend.”

Ty came to Devon’s room after hearing that he was not all right. He read the post, offered to defend Devon, and accepted Devon’s decision not to engage. Devon told him that Ms. Patricia, the children, Keisha, Kelsey, and MJ knew what had happened. Ty remained with him long enough to make clear that Devon had done the right thing.

Aftermath

Devon did not answer Shanice publicly. He returned to the recreation center and continued working with the children while the suspension and investigation proceeded.
